GCAT’s primary mission is to ensure high standards in the care of individuals affected by trauma through certification, training, and deployment of professionals. The academy offers a range of certifications, including those for Compassion Fatigue Educators, Field Traumatologists, and Certified Traumatologists. These certifications are designed to equip mental health professionals and others with the skills necessary to respond effectively to traumatic events and support victims in their recovery.

In addition to training, the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology is involved in active deployments to areas affected by disasters and crises in the United States and other parts of the world. It is recognized as the only federally acknowledged organization that deploys trauma specialists both nationally and internationally.

The organization also collaborates with various academic and governmental institutions, such as the Veterans Administration (VA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to provide comprehensive training and ensure that its members are well-prepared for deployment in critical situations. GCAT is also acknowledged by The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress® a multidisciplinary network of professionals who are committed to the advancement of intervention for survivors of trauma.
